Spadaconcept Codatronca TS

There are a number of reasons why this Italian-built sports car caught our eye here at the Motoring Channel. For one, it's based on the popular American Corvette sports car, and is powered by the venerable LS7 V8 engine.

Clearly it's an Italian design - with subtle American themes from its Corvette donor car - which means the styling is far from dull, and there's also the truncated tail that will turn more heads than a Ferrari F430 Challenge Stradale.

According to Spadaconcept, the company behind the car, the new vehicle is it's latest model which is built in the spirit and tradition of the Italian 'carrozzieria' (which roughly translates to 'auto body' but usually means 'coach building'). The niche car maker says the Codatronca TS (TS = Turismo Sportivo) combines both racing and touring characteristics and represents the latest evolution of the concept of truncated tail. 

Taking the C6 Chevrolet Corvette at it's base, Spadaconcept modifies most aspects of the vehicle from the body work, to the suspension, to the engine, and across the interior design as well.It explains that the Codatronca TS 'might' be the heir of the TZ models, and will be built in a limited series.

The Alfa TZ and TZ2 were designed by Ercole Spada - now the head of Spadaconcept which formed in 2006 - and commissioned by his friend Elio Zagato (some readers may be aware of the famous 'Zagato' name, which another exotic niche car maker that builds models based on famous sports cars from Maserati, Ferrari and others).

As well as the Spadaconcept Codatronca TS's slightly strange styling, typified in the truncated rear end, the car is very much entrenched in the performance world, powered by the Chevy LS7 V8. This 8-cylinder engine has a 7.0-litre capacity and in this Italian application it generates more than 330kW or 500 horsepower. The engine's vital statistics are as follows:

Power: 337kW @ 6300rpm

Torque: 637Nm @ 4800rpm

The strong V8 engine gives the Italian 2-door sports car an immense turn of speed, particularly when the car doesn't weigh too much, 1400kg without passengers. Like a traditional sports car the Codatronca TS's engine is front mounted, and 6-speed manual transmission shunts power and torque to the rear axle, making the car rear-wheel drive.

With it's low weight of 1400 kilograms, positive aerodynamics, and low 1246mm roofline, the Codatronca TS can be termed a super car because of its zero to 100km/h acceleration time of just 3.7 seconds. It is unwritten law that anything under 4.0 seconds can be claimed to be a true super car.

Top speed for the new Italian exotic is 330km/h, or 205mph. 

The body is suspended by cast aluminium independent double wishbone suspension at the front to give the car precise handling traits and with adjustable shock absorbers and adjustable front and rear anti-roll bars, the car can be tailored to suit driving and surface conditions.

The wheel and brake package is comprised of 18- x 9.5-inch front wheel rims and wider 19- x 12-inch rear wheel rims, while the braking system features 6-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers, with cross-drilled discs and ABS electronics.

The Italian company insists the Codatronca TS is a timeless design, finding its common point between the past and the future, while offering a surfeit of performance from its huge 7.0-litre V8 engine. Build in limited quantities, the Spadaconcept's latest design is sure to polarise opinion wherever it travels.

New Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG gets Bi-Turbocharged

Power is transferred to the rear wheels by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed automatic transmission.

The high-performance German saloon accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 4.5 seconds, and has an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155mph). With the AMG Performance package, the 100 km/h mark is reached in 4.4 seconds while the top speed raised to an electronically limited 300 km/h (187mph).

Despite an increase in output of 19HP and 170Nm for the basic engine, and 46HP and 270Nm for the V8 with the AMG Performance package, over the outgoing naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8, Mercedes says with a combined fuel consumption of 10.5lt/100km (22.4mpg US), the new S63 AMG is 3.9lt more economical than the previous model. Likewise, CO2 emissions have been reduced by almost 30 percent at 244g/km.

The updated for the 2011 model year S63 AMG is distinguished on the outside by the "V8 Biturbo" lettering on the mudguards and the new 19-inch alloy wheels fitted with 255/40 or 275/40 R19 tires.Inside, there's a revamped instrument cluster with an "AMG V8 Biturbo" starting screen, while the standard PASSION leather upholstery has been enhanced with new, contrasting color stitching.

The re-powered S63 AMG will be offered in both short- and long-wheelbase versions with pricing in Germany set at €143,752 and €151,368 respectively. The AMG Performance package costs €9,401. The market launch is planned for the end of September.

MCLAREN F1

McLaren F1 is, by far, the world's most expensive supercar and the fastest one as well. 

Designed as a Formula 1 for 2 (or even 3) McLaren F1 feautures a 6.0lt. BMW engine that can reach 60mph (97km/h) in 3.1 seconds. The car incorporates many world firsts for a road car: a fully carbon fibre monocoque structure, fully active fan-assisted ground effect aerodynamics, a central driving position with two offset rear passenger seats. 

The car's production has now stopped, after only some more than 100 F1s were built. So you have to try the used car market in order to get your hands on the world's fastest car.

The Chief Engineer Gordon Murroy`s concept refers to the use of expensive materials like: carbon, titanium, gold and for the first time, the use of carbon fiber monocoque chassis.

2010 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano

When it first debuted, the 2010 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano set a new standard in terms of performance that remains a benchmark for new sports car development to this day. Now Ferrari is introducing the new Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano HGTE (Handling Gran Turismo Evoluzione) package for the model to further underscore its sportiness and handling.

The package includes a modified set-up with stiffer springs and rear anti-roll bar as well as new calibration settings for the magnetorheological shock absorbers when the manettino is at its sportier settings. The ride height has also been lowered which in turn lowers the car's centre of gravity. This combined with the new set-up helps improve body control. The package also includes specifically optimised tyres featuring a compound that offers even better grip.

The car's electronics have also evolved to ensure even more prompt response to driver commands. The F1 gearbox's shifts are now even faster in high-performance settings, while a new engine software strategy has improved accelerator response.

The exhaust silencer has also been modified with the result producing an even more marked and thrilling sound under hard usage whilst still delivering just the right comfort levels at cruising speed.

From a styling point of view, the package also includes some distinctively sporty exterior and interior features with carbon-fibre widely used in the latter. The 20" split-rim wheels are new with a special diamond-cut and matte silver finish. The rear diffuser is finished in matte black to underscore the car's new set-up and highlight the chromed tail pipes. The cabin is sportier too thanks to a sophisticated mix of full-grain leather, black Alcantara® and carbon-fibre trim.

The new seats are trimmed in a new two-tone combination of leather with black Alcantara® inserts, and the seat backs are trimmed entirely in carbon-fibre. Embroidered in contrasting stitching on the headrest are a Prancing Horse and the words "Handling GTE".

Audi Sports Car R8

Indian car market is emerging as a lucrative option for carmakers throughout the world. The latest automobile giant planning to launch its new model in the country is Audi. The German luxury carmaker announced its plans of launching its latest sports car 'R8' in India, towards the end of 2008. The announcement came on Thursday, 3^rd July 2008. Based on Lamborghini Gallardo platform, the sports car comes with the combination of a chic and suave design, with superior performance.

While designing the car, the company managed to give it the proportions of a pure sports car, along with a high degree of day-to-day drivability. As per Benoit Tiers, Managing Director - Audi India, India has emerged as an important market for Audi. It was the tremendous interest for Audi R8, by their exclusive customers in India, which played an 

important role in bringing the car here. As far as the pricing of the sports car in India goes, the officials said that any decision regarding the same has still not been taken.

Based on the Audi Le Mans Quattro concept car, Audi R8 was first unveiled at the 2003 Geneva Auto Show and 2003 International Motor Show. It has been equipped with 4.2 L FSI V8 engine; the same one that was used in the B7 Audi RS4. The engine provides power of 420 PS (414 hp/309 kW) and torque of 317 ft-lb (430 N-m). The transmission is either a manual gearbox, with metal gate, or an "R-tronic" gearbox (single-clutch semi-automatic sequential manual), which means the same options as in Lamborghini Gallardo.

The car comes with an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system, along with "Audi Ceramic" Carbon-Ceramic composite brakes, with monoblock alloy Brembo calipers on, all four wheels. Apart from that, it boasts of exclusive equipment and a wide variety of customized interior options. Audi R8 has already won several awards in Germany and Europe. In India, it will be available at Audi’s seven exclusive dealerships - in Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Pune, Hyderabad and Bangalore.

NEW £35K BRIT SPORTS CAR

A new British sports car is on the horizon which is the brainchild of an ex-McLaren Cars designer.

Jim Dowle was involved in the design, development and testing of both the F1 road car and the SLR and mostly worked for Gordon Murray.

He is now working on the design of his own car and hopes to have a running prototype in 18 months.

The car is being described as a competitor to the Lotus Exige and a number of engine options are being considered.

Mr Dowle tells PistonHeads that the car will have around 200bhp from a mid-mounted motor, and the whole thing will weigh 870kg.

The car is not being built for out-and-out straight line speed; the priority will be on making the car fun to drive.

He currently runs JJAD, an automotive design & prototyping business, from a unit in Chobham,

Surrey, and is now working on a quarter scale clay model. An important factor will be providing luggage space to make the car a useable GT.

Chassis construction will be aluminium/carbon composite and the price will be around £35k.

Toyota FT-HS Hybrid Sports Car Concept

Toyota is going to show to the world its latest Hybrid sport car concept at the Detroit auto show. The new concept is called the FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept. It is a  2-door sports coupe using the Lexus GS450h engine which can put out 400 horsepower.

By combining a 197hp electric engine with a 292hp 3.5L V6, Toyota has created a sports car version of the GS450h – a car that was supremely quick but turned into a yacht when you wanted to take a corner. And with its light weight, the FT-HS should be able to hit the 60mph mark in just 4 seconds, undercutting the GS450h by over a second.

The Detroit auto show is a huge theater, a Las Vegas-like stage where carmakers do their best to thrill and amaze a world audience. Toyota will step up this year and present its FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept, a futuristic sports car that would be powered by a 400-horsepower hybrid powertrain.

Of course, the Toyota FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept is just a concept, little more than a container for the overheated dreams of a bunch of designers at Calty Design Research, Toyota's design studio in Newport Beach, California. In fact, what you see here is only a two-dimensional animation, a computer-generated image of the show car that Toyota will roll out at the Detroit auto show on Sunday, January 7, 2007.

Whatever, it's enough to get us thinking about the next Toyota Supra, which the automaker feels it needs to compete with Nissan's one-two high-performance punch of the 350Z and the coming Skyline GT-R.
